The United States is approaching a monumental milestone: its 250th anniversary. This semiquincentennial represents far more than just a historical marker on a calendar. It is a profound opportunity for Americans to look back on a centuries-long journey, reflecting on the shared triumphs, diverse cultures, and defining moments that shape the nation. From revolutionary ideas to world-changing innovations, the American story is a rich tapestry of resilience, growth, and unmatched character. To honor this landmark occasion, Boardwalk Puzzles invites you to celebrate the nation’s heritage in a unique way with the release of their new "America the Beautiful" puzzle.
Bringing a project of this magnitude to life required an artist capable of blending expansive history with lighthearted charm. Boardwalk Puzzles found that voice in artist Andy C Ellis, whose distinctively playful style offers a fresh, joyful perspective on the map of the United States. Ellis was thrilled to take on the challenge.
"My reaction when I received the invitation to do the artwork was excitement. This is a really cool project that as an artist you look for and something that you can put a lot of creativity into," said Ellis.
Designing "America the Beautiful" required an extensive deep dive into the unique lore, landmarks, and hidden gems of all 50 states. The resulting puzzle captures everything from sprawling national parks to localized trivia, turning the assembly process into an educational treasure hunt. As Ellis noted during his creative process, "There really is so much to celebrate and a lot of beauty in the country." His research uncovered delightful surprises, like Kool-Aid being invented in Nebraska and Cheerios originating in Minnesota. Ellis intentionally leaned into these lesser-known facts, admitting, "I like quirky things and things that feel like they don't belong, but they do belong."
However, capturing 250 years of a nation wasn’t just about lighthearted fun. It also meant honoring the complex steps the country has taken toward progress. Ellis ensured that the artwork balanced local trivia with meaningful historical milestones. "We also have important things, like representation from the civil rights movement and some of the things that we've corrected course as a country to make it better," Ellis said.
True to his engaging style, Ellis wasn’t afraid to let imagination override strict reality for the sake of composition and entertainment, giving puzzlers plenty of fun details to discover. "Why did I put a manatee off the Gulf in Florida? I don't think manatees live in saltwater, but sometimes you’ve got to lean into the fun and not take it too seriously," he shared.
Ultimately, Boardwalk Puzzles’ America the Beautiful serves as a festive, interactive monument to the American spirit. As families gather around the table to piece together the nation's history, Ellis hopes the artwork sparks unity, curiosity, and joy. "I hope they have fun and they don't take it too seriously and just enjoy all the fun things that our country has to offer and all the cool things that make each state different and unique and just a celebration of America," he concluded. Happy 250th, America!
