Puzzle Story
The Mi’ kmaq people called it Jipugtug which white settlers heard as Chebucto – meaning biggest harbor. This big harbor is what attracted people like Colonel Edward Cornwallis to establish a city here in 1749. The formal settlement was named after the Earl of Halifax, the patron of the project. Forged by numerous conflicts, unforgiving climate, and strong, northern seas, Haligonian’s have developed into a hearty and resilient folk. They extended the arm of compassion and aid to the victims of Titanic and pulled themselves back together after the horrific Halifax Explosion of 1917 – the largest recorded explosion until Hiroshima. A major, modern city, Halifax still maintains a humble charm not often retained. Come to the land of the “blue nosers” and experience Halifax and have some poutine while you’re at it.
