From a dozen different streets, a long and somber train of covered wagons joined at Parley Street and crawled toward the Mississippi River. From Parley Street, the saints stepped onto a frozen river, beginning their forced exodus westward. Some had gone before them. Others would come later. And soon, Nauvoo, IL—a once thriving community of thousands—would become a virtual ghost town.
