For years, pioneer settlers lived in log cabins and lean-tos while they worked diligently to build new brick homes, which represented beauty, prosperity, and permanence - things they yearned for after years of persecution and relocation. There were seven brickyards in Nauvoo in 1840, and people went to great lengths to ensure their homes were constructed with the best bricks available.
