Mexico
by James Poai
Cities and towns across Mexico celebrate special occasions such as Mother’s Day, the end of school, and national holidays with music, food, and dancing. Spectators and participants gather in plazas to celebrate with ballet folklórico. Mariachi bands play traditional songs while dancers perform the country’s national dance—Jarabe Tapatío, also called the Mexican hat dance. Women dancers wear long, colorful skirts and long-sleeved blouses decorated with ribbons. Male dancers wear the traditional charro (Mexican horseman) suits with buttons and silver embellishments. Under their jackets men wear white shirts accented with brightly colored neckerchiefs. The male dancers’ hats and boots are color-coordinated with their suits.
