Chicago Downtown
by James Poai
The iconic “C-H-I-C-A-G-O” sign on State Street stands nearly six stories high. It is suspended over the entrance to the 3,600-seat movie palace called “the Wonder Theatre of the World”. The luxurious theater opened Oct. 26, 1921, charging 25 cents for midday movies and 50 cents for evening movies. The Chicago Theatre was the first large, lavish movie palace in America and became the prototype for all others. Built in the French Baroque style it was modeled after the Royal Chapel at Versailles and the Paris Opera House. The theater is in the center of old downtown Chicago and is home to a 29-rank Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ. This art is part of our American Cities Collection.
