One misfortune, the plague of 1634, decimated the population and left the city unchanged from its 17th-century character for over a hundred years. Artists and tourists began recognizing the unique historic charm in the town and began preserving the architecture and history. Because of this, Rothenburg was mostly spared destruction in World War II. Given the option of abandoning the city or having it razed by artillery, German commander Major Thömmes ignored orders and surrendered the town to save it.
